Erik’s Rehearsal Report #7
Winchester March / Ménage à Quatre / Caps in the Air
Nothing new. See your play directions.
Da Lounge Bar / The Rakers
Important point: dynamic signals (quiet/loud) are not in any way tempo signals. Quieter does not equate to slower.
Big swell at the switch into Rakers. That would be swell.
Pirate Cat / Old Wife … / Dance of the Demon Daffodils
We lost tempo on this set. Work on this.
Baker’s Favorite / Gondolin / Baker’s
Lost tempo here, particularly while attention was on the variation stuff and on switches. We have to attend to both at once.
Kitchen Jig / Scatter the Mud / One-Horned Sheep
Went really well. We held tempo during the strange things happening in the A part of sheep.
Reel Eugène / Turlute …
Turlute slowed down significantly the we got into the drones and with the horn parts. Really anticipate those drones and get on top of the beat for your individual parts. Remember to look up during the ending. Five D notes and hold the last one. This will be our last contra set of the evening, so we want it to be memorable. In a good way.
Fatal Bert / Rumblestrip
Fatal Bert variation: Mic’d back up and horns only.
Rumblestrip…Various variation instructions will be in your play directions which will be emailed to you this week.
V1: Horns and mic’d backup. Horns, play at tempo…
V2: Everyone play the first parts of bars B1, B3, B5 and B7-8. Same in the second B part. Percussion plays in the parts that everyone else doesn’t play.
At first, Rumblestrip really dragged. Please work on that.
However, when we came back to this set toward the end of rehearsal we did pretty well keeping tempo.
Out on the Road / Rising Sun
We need to work to not slow so much at the switch. The coda from Our on the Road needs to be at the same tempo as we’d been playing. Much better when we did the switch again, but at the gig we won’t be able to take another run at it, so it needs to be solid the first time.
Doughboy Rag / Old Joe
Look at 112 bpm for this one.
Work on keeping this one lively with all parts in agreement with regard to where the downbeat should be.
Look at the ending and choke it when we get there.
Skippin’ Cat / White River Bottoms / Bell Cow
When the fiddles do their hern diddles on Skippin’ Cat (last time through), everyone else needs to be playing. This will be signaled as a variation.
Last White River will be Fiddles and Guitar only.
Variation in Bell cow will be that two-bar call/response between fiddles and bo nose.
The long half notes in the C part of Bell Cow still need to be in tempo. Lift off each of those so you can come in on the next one on time.
Honeylocust / Bogan’s
Sounds good. Nothing new.
Waltz des Bois
Three times through. Different each time. Look in your play directions (to be emailed) to understand when to play.
Last Light
Five times through.
Bit of ritard at the end.
Schottis från Lima
Tempo about 140/quarter note.
Twice through.
Low harmony is fine the first time. Both harmonies the second time.
Britches Stitches
Remember to choke the ending.
